Get some more insight into our most personal and band-inspired single yet, 'Another', all about chasing unfulfilling romantic relationships and sacrificing the relationships that really matter the most in the process. This single was released on the 3rd of July and playlisted on Spotify's editorial playlist 'New Music Fridays South Africa'.

Exactly two months after the release of our last single, 'Pink', we released 'Another', one of our favourite songs to play live, and also one of the songs that each band member personally connects with the most. The material of the song was inspired by a number of personal matters going on in each of the boys' love lives, and the resultant realisation that these pursuits may be exciting and fun, we all would ultimately gravitate back to one another whenever things weren't going our way, and that those relationships, the ones with your friends, are the ones that will last, through one partner or another. We all have a tendency to accidentally sacrifice the most important relationships in our lives in the pursuit of fleeting romantic ones. This song is a reminder for you not to do that, and that that perfect person is probably not nearly as perfect as you think.
"She drinks like a first year; She loves like a mother; She's friends with the boys, and the best part is She's in love with another."
As per usual, we got our songwriter Jono to chat to us about the songwriting process, inspiration gathered from the other boys, and how it all came together.
Hey Imagine: Tell us about the origin of the song? How did it come about, what inspired you?
Jono: So I sat down one day with my guitar, as per, and I decided that I wanted to write a happy, kinda bouncy, kinda vibey song. I then came up with the chorus guitar part which had a really interesting rhythm and a really cool, far from standard chord progression. We were all having our minds blown by some Greg-and-a-girl-related skinder, and so I then asked the band for lyrical inspiration, because for once I wanted to write a song that wasn’t just about my own problems. Brad (our manager) [Editors Note - fucking legend] then sent me some lyrics he’d been playing with, about his own situation, and I really liked one of the lines that read “she drinks like a first year – she loves like a mother”. This instantly inspired the chorus and the rest of the song sort of stemmed from my personal affliction of falling in love with anything that says hello.
At the time of writing this song, I had really begun to appreciate how much my friends meant to me and how much I would rather spend time with them than chasing another doomed relationship. The verse melody and lyrics came about when I was listening to sad piano music before bed and humming over a particularly beautiful chord progression. The next day I decided that I was gonna speed the song up by about a million beats per minute and sew it onto the chorus that I had written. The story then grew into one that talks about rejection and how being rejected isn’t always a bad thing if, while in pursuit of love, you start to lose sight of the important things.
HI: What is the overarching message of the song?
J: The overarching message of the song is that you should never overestimate the perfection of someone that you’ve barely gotten to know and that you should also never underestimate how much satisfaction you can gain from spending more time with your friends that you have built deep and meaningful relationships with.
HI: Who is this track written for?
J: This song was written for anyone who has ever been rejected and it also serves as a warning to anyone who might get rejected in the future. It's a reminder that it's not the end of the world, you will get back up, and it'll just be another story that you talk about with your friends.
HI: What's your favorite lyric in the song?
J: My favourite lyric in the song is probably
“Sweet Fanny Adams”
I like this lyric purely because I was trying to find another word for ‘fuck all’ ( just in case the radio thinks it’s a banger ) and in doing so found out that the name ‘Fanny Adams’ was another way of saying the French phrase. It is also just a funny name.
HI: What makes you proudest about this song?
J: What makes me proudest about the song is that I managed to actually finish it. I spent so many fucking sleepless nights trying to mix it that I almost went absolutely mental. I’m also proud that it slaps absolute balls when played live [Editors Note: RIP live shows, we miss you more than you'll ever know xxx].
If you haven't already, we think you should definitely go listen to the track because a) you've just read this shit, what would be the point if you don't go listen to the song, and b) it's a banger and you'll love it.
